Some bird dogs are built to work close and methodically, and then there are dogs like Hill’s Hunt Close Spec. Known simply as Spec, this five-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer is a big-running, hard-charging bird dog with an incredible motor and the pedigree to back it up.

Spec comes from proven field-trial bloodlines designed to produce dogs with speed, stamina, bird drive, and the ability to cover country. His grandfather is Crosswinds Microchip, a National Hall of Fame dog whose influence can be seen in Spec's athleticism and desire in the field. When the tailgate drops, Spec is ready to go, and he approaches every hunt with the same intensity and excitement.

Spec is a handsome liver roan male GSP with the athletic build you would expect from his field-trial heritage. He is a big, fast, hard-running dog that loves to stretch out and search for birds. His motor allows him to cover ground efficiently, and his bird drive is through the roof. Spec doesn't simply enjoy bird hunting—he lives for it.

Over the years, Spec has accumulated a tremendous amount of experience. He has traveled to Kansas several times to hunt wild birds, putting his nose, stamina, and natural instincts to work in the wide-open country that demands a lot from a bird dog. Between hunting trips and time spent traveling to bird country, Spec has logged thousands of miles on the road doing what he loves.

Spec has also been hunting at Mississippi Upland since we opened, making him one of the dogs that has been part of our story from the beginning. Season after season and hunt after hunt, he has gained the kind of experience that can only come from spending time on the ground and finding birds.

For all of Spec's speed and drive, there is one part of the hunt that may excite him more than anything else: the retrieve.

Spec is one of the best retrieving German Shorthaired Pointers we have ever seen. He absolutely lives for the opportunity to retrieve a bird. Once a bird is down, Spec wants to be part of the action. His enthusiasm, determination, and natural retrieving ability make watching him complete the job one of the most enjoyable parts of hunting behind him.
