MU's Last Copper Penny

Some bird dogs show their potential early, and MU’s Last Copper Penny, better known around Mississippi Upland simply as Penny, is certainly one of them. Originally from Lewisburg, Ohio, Penny came to Mississippi with an outstanding pedigree, plenty of natural ability, and all the ingredients we look for in a great upland bird dog.

Penny began guiding hunts at only six months old. From the beginning, she showed a natural understanding of how to find birds and quickly proved that she belonged in the field. Now entering her second season at Mississippi Upland, Penny continues to develop with every hunt, and we believe her best years are still well ahead of her.

Penny is a medium-range bird dog with an incredible nose. She covers enough ground to find birds efficiently while remaining connected to the hunters behind her. She's a pleasure to handle and an equally enjoyable dog to watch work.

One of Penny's greatest natural abilities is the way she uses the wind. She understands how to work scent and will adjust her approach as conditions change. When Penny gets the scent of quail, she knows how to work it out. Once she locates her birds, she has a beautiful style and will lock up with the intensity you want to see in a pointing dog.

Penny is a natural quail dog through and through. She has the nose, bird drive, point, and instincts needed to consistently produce exciting moments in the field. Add a good retrieve to the package, and Penny is developing into the kind of complete hunting dog that makes a day of quail hunting memorable.

Her natural ability isn't surprising when you look at her pedigree. Four of Penny's eight great-grandparents are NASTRA Hall of Fame dogs: Last Dance Lily, Rucks Brockway Mad Dash, Crosswinds Microchip, and Diamond S Texas Express. That's an extraordinary concentration of proven bird-dog genetics in her pedigree, and we see pieces of that heritage every time Penny goes to work.

But pedigrees only tell part of the story. A dog still has to perform when the tailgate drops, and Penny has shown from an exceptionally young age that she has the ability and desire to do exactly that.

She's also got plenty of personality.

Around Mississippi Upland, Penny can be a funny dog with a personality all her own. She's enjoyable to have around, and that personality makes her even more fun to watch as she continues to mature. In the field, however, she knows when it's time to get serious. When birds are present, her natural instincts take over.

What excites us most about Penny is her future. She's already accomplished a great deal for such a young dog, but she's still gaining experience. Every season, every hunt, and every covey gives her another opportunity to become better at her craft.
